Can you imagine a chess game where you play a 3 minutes of chess, then take a 60 second break, then box with your opponent for 3 minutes? Then repeat the whole process again for 11 rounds alternating between chess and boxing? Well, in some countries this exact thing has turned into a popular sport referred to as chessboxing. This hybrid sport which combines two seemingly opposite activities may not be that well known in the United States, but has become popular in several countries in the past few years. Chessboxing consists of 11 rounds which alternate between boxing and chess. Just imagining the mental shift that has to occur from the adrenaline fueled intensity of fighting to the quiet focus of chess boggles my mind. Who would attend these things? Is the stadium divided into nerds and jocks? Judging from the video below, this does seem to be a popular sport.
